Two years later and STILL a hit! Between today and my last review on this place, I have found 100 excuses to visit Venice Bakery & Restaurant, but for one reason or another it hasn't happened. Today, as I was guiding my San Diego high school friend around LA, I made sure she had a great first full meal in the city, so I brought her here. She loved it! And I fell in love all over again.
This hole in the wall provides the best chilaquiles in all the City of LA, as far as I know. I definitely want to expand my horizon and try the enchiladas next time though. The salsa is spicy, but not unbearable. The beans are seasoned to perfection. And the eggs are a great neutralizer to the flavors. It's a great combination, everything. They also provide complimentary bolillo (bread) with the orders. TIP: Check in on Yelp for a 10% discount between 1pm-4pm.
The service was stellar, 5-star worthy alone on the way we were treated as customers! I don't think I ever got his name but you know who you are, amazing! He accommodated all our requests, was helpful, friendly, and efficient, kind, warm, and welcoming. They even said "Buen Provecho!" after delivering our orders. That's the Spanish equivalent to "Bon Appétit". I usually only hear this when I'm in Mexico, so to hear it today made me feel like home.
Make sure to make a visit sometime! This place is for everyone: a dad and boys breakfast, a girls brunch, and friend catchup. The food is amazing, the service makes you feel like you're among family, you'll definitely leave satisfied- that's a guarantee! -

How did I not see this place before!? It's a hidden spot but once you find it... you'll be happy you did. Great little Mexican spot with amazing food and portion sizes.
I had the beef flautas and they were huge! The rice and beans are so good and remind me of home food. My friend tried the enchiladas and also said they were amazing. We ended up getting togo boxes but so happy we had left overs!
Try the Hibiscus Agua Fresca .. it's not overly sweet but just right.
Great price! Great service! -

Stopped by here on my way to Vegas. Nice family restaraunt with friendly staff--no habla for me but they did not care.
Their protein burrito was a couple pounds of greatness. With the spicy salsa added I did not talk, just ate.
Three stars only because the physical characteristics (menu, flooring, and appearance) needs some TLC but it should not be a reason to shy away from if you are dining in. -

So tasty! We came on a Tuesday morning, plenty of seating inside and out. Chilaquiles with green sauce, spicy, was great! So much food! My partner got the huevos rancheros , the beans are very tasty and they offer multiple salsas. Inside is a large selection of pan dulce, we filled a bag for $5.
Cute spot, amazing and authentic food! Thanks for having us :) -

Like most countries, Mexican food varies by region. The dishes at Venice Bakery are more reflective of the south, where black beans and plantains are popular. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of black beans so I don't usually frequent restaurants that only serve black beans... however, that doesn't stop me from coming here.
The chilaquiles are pretty good. Not "go out of your way" good, but definitely tasty and on my short list for chilaquiles on the westside. I usually order red because I like really spicy, but here I get half and half ("divorciados") because they have a good spicy green salsa. (Make sure you choose mild or spicy, because there are two versions so get the one you prefer). Ironically, the red isn't spicy lol but I drench it in the spicy red table salsa and then it's good to go. Comes with your choice of eggs; super chilaquiles also includes an option for various meats. The beef milanesa is good. Otherwise, their red meat is rather thin like tasajo (again, typical of southern Mexico). I also pass on the platano that comes with breakfast, but it's a welcomed addition for most people. Plus, breakfasts are served with bolillo to start (ooh, carbs!).
Equally important is the very affordable pricing ...except the coffee. $3 for a drip coffee, whereas a fresh juice (I like the "Red Power" (w/ beets, carrots, etc) or the green juice) is $5 and sizable.
Oh, and it should be noted, their cafe de la olla unfortunately is not 'de la olla.' I first tried this place because some Yelp review raved about the cafe de la olla ("I too was hustled, scammed, bamboozled, hood winked, led astray"). Rather it's just a flavored coffee.
They also have a small bakery. Haven't tried any desserts; the pan dulce is okay (but, admittedly, I am a pan dulce snob) sorry not sorry.
Lastly, they open at 5:00 am! Definitely not a morning person, but when I must eat while it's still dark out, this is a great option. However, food took a much longer time to be served when I went once at 6:00 am. Maybe call ahead if you are taking out. Weekends are usually busy, but food comes out quickly. Plus, weekends menus usually include menudo, pozole, and/or birria. Once I get around to trying those, I'll update.
Plenty of metered parking. No booze.
